My essay is about how to begin the writing process in a very creative, very productive, very relaxed manner. I use the metaphor of the graffiti as a device to do away with Writer’s Block, which is the #1 enemy of writers young or old, professional or not, award-winning or loser.

I have chosen the graffiti as a paradigm because it represents the chaos and the promise of creative thinking leading to creative writing. While I have just invented the terms ‘Law of Graffiti’ and ‘graffiti thinking’ and ‘graffiti writing’ and ‘graffiti research’ (see my essay), I have in fact been applying all these techniques for the last 40 years or more. The graffiti is not neutral, and that’s one reason I have chosen it; above all, the graffiti is unplanned, disorderly, disconnected – and that describes perfectly the beginning of the creative process.

This image appears in my essay ‘To Harvest The Sun. To Sow The Wind And Reap The Whirlwind.’ It is in fact an intentional distortion of objects and shot with almost no light at all. It indicates both a bright and dark future. The essay focuses on the claim by the Nobel laureate (Chemistry 1988) German Professor Hartmut Michel that it is senseless to pursue a biofuels program for any country because more energy will be spent than earned. The professor is encouraging instead the harnessing of the power of the sun through photovoltaic (solar) cells and wind machines.
